Major delays as truck overturns at Dee WhyBus slams into wall at Chatswood stationSydney traffic

This is the moment an out-of-control truck careened around a corner on Sydney’s northern beaches on Monday morning, narrowly avoiding wiping out a line of cars waiting at a set of traffic lights.

The CCTV footage, taken from a property overlooking the notorious intersection in Dee Why and supplied to Channel Nine, shows the truck teetering on two wheels before overbalancing and sliding along Pittwater Road on Monday morning. The shipping container on the back of the truck, which was carrying 25 tonnes of tiles, crashed onto the road.

Warringah councillor Pat Daley was driving one of the vehicles waiting at Pittwater Road’s intersection with Warringah Road at 6.15am on Monday.

The truck had just come down the steep section of Warringah Road and had turned left onto Pittwater Road when it crashed, and came within 10 metres of smashing into Cr Daley’s car.

“It is an absolute miracle there’s been no loss of life,” he said.

Cr Daley, a former police officer, said it was pure luck that no south-bound vehicles on Pittwater Road were waiting in the lane closest to the centre of the road, as they would have been “completely crushed”.

“I was pulled up at the intersection heading south towards the city,” Cr Daley said.

“I heard a screeching sound. Whether it was brakes or tyres, I’m not sure, but my attention was drawn to the right of me. As I looked to the right, I could see this truck was clearly out of control, and then lost it and tipped over with a very, very large bang. How it didn’t take out traffic that was going south is an absolute miracle.”

He said part of the truck came to rest in the south-bound lanes of Pittwater Road.

The truck driver suffered minor injuries, and no other vehicles were hit.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
