Man dies in logging truck crash

A man is dead and another is fighting for life in hospital after their vehicle and a logging truck collided west of Geelong early this morning.

Police said the truck was travelling west along the Princes Highway at Buckley about 2.25am when it hit a blue Ford sedan travelling in the opposite direction.

The impact severely damaged the front of the sedan and caused the logging truck, which was not carrying any logs at the time, to roll on to its side.

The passenger in the car died at the scene. He is yet to be formally identified.

The driver of the car, a man aged in his 30s, was airlifted to The Alfred hospital with life-threatening injuries.

A police spokeswoman said the truck driver, a Winchelsea man aged in his 30s, was not injured and was assisting police with their investigation.

The Princes Highway is blocked in both directions and traffic is being diverted at Cape Otway Road.

The man’s death bring’s Victoria’s road toll to 224 for the year, 17 fewer than for the same period last year.
