Prices down at Hay Merino Breeders’ sale

REALISED prices were noticeably different last Friday when a small crowd competed at the Hay, NSW Merino Breeders’ October sale.

Offering approximately 27,000 head, the better priced young ewe hoggets made $180- $214 a head which was a stark contrast to the 10 sales which cleared the $230 a head mark, topping at $281 a month ago in the district’s September market.

But mirroring more recent trends prices obtained for older aged ewes were fully firm, and $5- $10 a head dearer in the case of wethers especially when meat processor demand became involved.

Meat processors in fact purchased the lion’s share of the one year-old wether lines at prices between $89 and $118 while shorn lines of 11-drop wethers made $81 to $106 with graziers more actively involved.

Unshorn lines of 11-drop wethers mostly made $75- $95.
