Temperatures to swelter across the southeast

DRY and gusty northwesterly winds are dragging interior heat over the southeast of the country today. This will cause the mercury to soar over a wide area including Adelaide and Melbourne.

Adelaide is on track for scorcher today. It’s already reached 30 degrees as of 9am local time, and it will peak in the mid to high 30’s this afternoon. A gusty southerly change by late afternoon or early evening will help return temperatures to near average for the weekend.

Melbourne will peak in the low to mid thirties today as the hot northerlies gust over 50 km/h at times. This should make it the hottest day since March.

Elsewhere in the southeast, it will be even hotter inland, with locations such as Port Augusta and Woomera potentially hitting 40 degrees.

Today’s heat will not last. A change is due to move through later today with a trough, triggering storms and dropping the mercury close to average for the weekend.
